Curriculum Intent
Science is a core subject and is taught at St Bede’s every week. The aim of our weekly science lessons is to develop children’s curiosity and embed knowledge and understanding of the world. The breadth of the curriculum allows children to explore and develop a high level of skill. Through thorough planning, practical lessons, and teacher knowledge, we aim to provide outstanding teaching to inspire children.
Implementation
Teachers deliver a subject-based topic that encompasses physics, chemistry and biology. Practical investigations are integral to our science lessons and we aim to develop children’s ambitions by introducing them to the greatest scientists in British and world history. Our ‘Love to Investigate’ Cornerstones scheme also allows us to incorporate investigative science into our foundation subjects, where relevant. Children are taught key threshold concepts. A ‘threshold concept’ is a concept that, once understood, changes the way that a person thinks - it unlocks understanding. Threshold concepts were identified per unit and woven through each strand in the curriculum map. The rationale for each topic highlights which threshold concepts are covered within the strand. By building the transition curriculum around the threshold concepts, the key knowledge required for learners to progress in their understanding is emphasised.
Impact
Following our challenging science curriculum the children will leave St Bede's with robust scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding. Have a good awareness of the nature, processes and methods of science and be an equipped learner with the scientific knowledge required to understand the applications and implications of science as they move in to key stage 3.
