Curriculum Intent

The maths curriculum at St Bede’s Catholic Academy aims to ensure that all pupils:

•        become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics.

•        reason mathematically using key vocabulary.

•        solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems.

Implementation

All children from Year 1 to Year 6 access the White Rose Maths scheme programme, using a Mastery style pedagogy and quality first teaching. Homework is set to reflect the days learning and we use CGP books to consolidate learning in Key Stage 2.  At home, children use Timetables Rockstar to enhance number work. EYFS base their learning on a mastery style curriculum to prepare them for their transition into the national curriculum and the mastery method of teaching from year 1 to 6.

Impact

By the end of Year 6, we aspire that a St Bede’s mathematician will have developed a bank of efficient and accurate mathematical skills that can be used effectively.  Children will be able to apply these skills and understanding to other areas and be confident and resilient problem-solvers with the ability to reason and articulate their ideas mathematically.

Children will know that maths is a vital life skill that they will rely on in many areas of their daily life.  Children will have a positive view of maths, due to learning in an environment where maths is promoted as being an exciting and enjoyable subject in which they can investigate and ask questions.
